Smeal MBA Program Structure
The internationally ranked residential MBA Program at the Penn State Smeal College of Business starts in August and spans two academic years on the Penn State University Park campus in State College, Pennsylvania.First Year
- Orientation: The two-week program to prepare new students for the Smeal MBA experience begins in mid-August.
- Fall Semester: Core curriculum classes begin at the end of August. Each MBA semester is divided into seven-week modules separated by a one-week immersion experience. Modules feature their own sets of classes with typical class sessions running Monday through Thursday. Interviewing for summer internship opportunities begins in September. The fall semester also includes a weeklong break in late November.
- Semester Break: Following the conclusion of the fall semester and final exams in December, Penn State students have a multi-week break prior to the start of the spring semester.
- Spring Semester: Another seven-week module of classes precedes the Global Immersion at the end of February. Following a weeklong spring break, Smeal MBAs begin the fourth module of first-year classes. The fourth module includes final core curriculum classes as well as concentration introduction courses.
- Summer Internship: Following the conclusion of the spring semester, most first year MBAs begin internships with organizations around the world.
Second Year
The module structure in the second year of the program mirrors the first, with seven-week modules separated by one-week immersion experiences. Coursework in the second year is elective in nature in support of concentration requirements. As with the first year, there are also weeklong fall and spring breaks as well as a longer break between the fall and spring semesters. In January of the second year, student teams begin working on the capstone Applied Professional Experience. The Smeal MBA Program concludes in May with a graduation ceremony on the University Park campus.
