The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will celebrate its 6,029 graduates this weekend during the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony and Spring Commencement.
More than 200 of Carolina’s doctoral candidates will be recognized at the hooding ceremony on May 7 at 9:30 a.m. During the event at the Dean E. Smith Center, graduate students who earned their Ph.D.’s in the past academic year will have the the hood of their Commencement regalia conferred by their advisors or dissertation committee chairs.
Dr. Samantha Joye, Carolina alumnus and ocean researcher who studied the effects of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, will deliver the keynote speech.
Spring Commencement, which will be presided over by Chancellor Carol L. Folt, will be held May 8 at 9 a.m. in Kenan Stadium. For the first time since the late 1980s, graduating students will experience Commencement from the field to create a sea of Carolina blue.
Anne-Marie Slaughter, a critically acclaimed author and trailblazing public leader who made waves with her article “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” will deliver the commencement address.

We place heavy emphasis on the case-study method and small group activities in our MBA classes. Students receive an H (High Pass – Clear Excellence), P (Pass – Entirely Satisfactory Graduate Work), L (Low Pass – Inadequate/Unsatisfactory Graduate Work), or F (Fail). MBA students at UNC Kenan-Flagler do not receive rankings or grade point averages (GPA) Our year one curriculum provides students more flexibility to pursue their educational and career goals. The year one or core curriculum consists of 15 courses and 3 additional Core Requirements. The first semester is front-loaded to provide the core business skills to become broadly literate in business. Later in the first year, students can choose from an array of more than 125 elective courses tailored to intended careers or summer internships. -
